It’s not often we get a new Lake District bus service to enjoy but we now have one, and its free!

Buttermere shuttle bus

Yes this is a free shuttle bus that is running daily between Cockermouth and Buttermere for the duration of the summer school holidays, 17th July to 5th September 2021. There are 5 trips each way every day on the 16 seater minibus. Leaving from the centre of Cockermouth the bus travels up the attractive Lorton Vale valley before reaching beautiful Crummock Water and then beyond to the ever popular Buttermere village.

Crummock Water

If you want to explore Crummock Water it is worth getting off the bus by the car parks at Rannerdale. A nearby footpath follows the attractive lakeshore northwards for about a mile to the foot of the lake at Lanthwaite Wood. Or you can wonder into Rannerdale valley and skirt around Rannerdale Knotts to a footpath at the southern end of Crummock Water which leads to Buttermere village.

Buttermere is an attractive small village surrounded by some mighty mountains. If you don’t fancy climbing a mountain there is an excellent and popular 4.5 mile footpath around Buttermere lake which must be one of the most spectacular low level walks in the Lake District. There are a few cafes and pubs in Buttermere for refreshments before you catch the shuttle bus back to Cockermouth.

Buttermere is also on the 77/77A bus service route so you could link with service 77 for Honister Pass, Borrowdale and Keswick, or service 77A for Whinlatter Forest and Keswick. Cockermouth is on the X4 & X5 bus service from Workington to the west or Penrith and Keswick to the east.
